Steven Moore discusses Fort Benning possibly being changed back to Fort Moore through House bill

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — There is a move in place that would change the name of Fort Benning back to Fort Moore. The proposal is part of the defense spending bill currently before Congress.

This week, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on a House bill that would revert the name of the military post under legislation passed by the Republican-led House of Representatives, according to the news agency.

WRBL News 3 anchor Cameron Sanders spoke with Steven Moore, the son of Lt. Gen. Hal Moore, on Thursday about the possible change.

"It bothers me that it was changed back to Benning in the first place," Steven Moore expressed.

The military post just south of Columbus was known as Fort Benning for more than 100 years.

Two years ago, the name was changed to Fort Moore to honor Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and his wife, Julia Moore. But in March, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth changed the name back to Fort Benning.

"When Secretary Hegseth took over, he had three key priorities he wanted to do with the military. One was restore military ethos. Second was make sure meritocracy was implemented. And his third priority was to rebuild the military," Steven Moore explained.

Steven Moore said he feels his parents met those requirements.

"When you look at mom and dad's lifetime of contributions, certainly dad, as a Distinguished Flying Cross winner as well as three Bronze Stars for valor, certainly qualified in the warrior ethos category," he said.

He added emphatic support for his mother's sacrifices.

"Any veteran who advocates for Benning instead of Moore probably ought to get down on their knees if they lost a comrade in combat and thank Julie Moore for the fact that their fallen comrade was notified with dignity instead of a taxicab throwing a telegram on their front door," Steven Moore said.

The proposal remains tied up in Congress as lawmakers continue debating the defense spending bill.
