Tanquingcen: Import search key for NLEX to counter June Mar

For NLEX Road Warriors assistant coach Siot Tanquingcen, finding the right import will be a make-or-break move for the team heading into the new PBA season.

In a one-on-one interview with Sports Now, the former champion mentor with Ginebra and San Miguel stressed the need for a reinforcement who can help them in the frontline battle—particularly against eight-time MVP June Mar Fajardo of San Miguel.

“‘Yung paghanap ng import hit and miss eh. It is always crucial for teams like sa amin na wala naman kaming big na big na mamamatch-up kay June Mar, so it is critical na makahanap kami ng somebody who can fill that void. Our team, center-wise, medyo kulang kami,” Tanquingcen said.

The Road Warriors, now coached by Jong Uichico, are working to bolster their roster after falling short in recent campaigns. With frontline depth still a weakness, management is eyeing an import who can provide size, interior defense, and rebounding presence to complement their guard-heavy lineup.

Tanquingcen admitted that while imports can swing a team’s fortunes, it always remains a gamble. The challenge, he said, is finding one who can produce while blending smoothly into the system.

With other PBA squads reloading, NLEX knows its import choice could very well define its chances in Season 50.
