Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings head coach Tim Cone believes that the league’s younger squads are poised to take over the PBA in the coming years.
“The young upstarts, man, I don’t know, they just keep getting better all the time,” Cone said when asked about his assessment of the emerging contenders.
“They have great balance, you know, size, and they have great guard play. They’re really a complete team over there,” he added.
Among the youth-laden teams that are stacking up their rosters are the Converge FiberXers, Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, and the Phoenix Fuel Masters.
Cone pointed out that the only ingredient missing for the group is time and experience, stressing that their growth will be accelerated once they learn how to deal with adversity.
“They just need, you know, some time to continue to gel and mature and go through some failure and jump them to the next level,” Cone explained.
“But they are, if we look at it, you know, I think they can stay intact for the next two or three years. They could become the dominant team in the league,” he added.
Cone, the league’s winningest coach, also noted that the timing could be in favor of this new generation, with some established stars approaching the latter stages of their careers.
“As, you know, (San Miguel Beermen center) June Mar Fajardo starts to wind down, some of the teams start to wind down, those guys are just going to be getting better,” Cone said. (AC)
