New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe expressed openness to playing for the Philippine men’s national baseball team in the Asian Games next year in Japan.
Philippine Amateur Baseball Association (PABA) president Rodolfo “Boy” Tingzon extended the invitation to Volpe following his visit to the historic Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium (RMBS) on Tuesday
Volpe, who has Filipino roots, responded positively to the offer, saying, “Yes—why not?”
Volpe met with PABA officials during the visit and was presented with the official cap of the Philippine men’s national team, which recently captured the gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.
The visit was facilitated by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), with Chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio helping arrange Volpe’s appearance at the venue.
Accompanied by his family, Volpe also paid tribute to Babe Ruth, who played in RMBS’ inaugural game in December 1934.
Volpe’s visit placed the spotlight on the possibility of his involvement with the national team, as Philippine baseball officials continue efforts to strengthen the program ahead of major international competitions. (AC)
