Barangay Ginebra San Miguel head coach Tim Cone declined to comment on the possibility of Jamie Malonzo’s return to the Gin Kings following his recent strong showing for the Gilas Pilipinas in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games.
According to the winningest PBA mentor, the decision about the former De La Salle University Green Archers’ forward’s return to the Gin Kings were not his to address.
“But I won’t even say anything about Ginebra. That’s not my say,” Cone added.
Cone, however, praised Malonzo’s recent performance for the Norman Black-mentored national team, particularly after the forward rebounded from injuries that stalled his momentum earlier this year.
“Jamie was awesome. There was a reason why he was on the GILAS A team now we’re calling it. We’re calling it the A and B and C. There was a reason why he was on that team,” Cone said. “And injuries kind of derailed him, but he’s getting his game back. And he’s still very much a part of the pool.”
Cone said Malonzo had hoped to make a strong impression during the Guam window of international play, though circumstances prevented that from happening.
“But happy for him. And I know that he wanted to use the Guam window as a chance to show his game up, but it didn’t work out for him,” Cone said. “And then he was able to come in the Southeast Asia game and really show.”
Cone also shared that Malonzo had been performing well behind the scenes during Gilas Pilipinas preparations, particularly during practices in Guam.
“When he was playing with us in Guam, I mean, when he was practicing with it, he was, I kept saying this over and over to anybody who wanted to listen, he was playing great in our practices,” Cone said. “Just the guy.” (AC)
