Rain or Shine Elasto Painters head coach Joseller “Yeng” Guiao described his team’s 96-79 PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup quarterfinals opener loss to the Meralco Bolts on Saturday as a valuable learning experience.
Guiao said Rain or Shine used much of the second half to study the adjustments they will need to make for the winner-take-all matchup on Monday, especially after falling behind early.
“What was important was we did not give up. We wanted to make most out of the situation,” Guiao said. “We used a lot of the minutes in the second half just to learn the adjustments that we are to make on the Monday game.”
The veteran coach acknowledged that the Elasto Painters dug themselves into a deep hole by allowing Meralco to establish a big lead in the opening quarter, which delayed their ability to find a rhythm.
“We just gave up too big of a lead in the first quarter,” he said. “Medyo second half na, malaki na masyado ’yung lamang.”
Guiao added that the loss also highlighted areas that need immediate correction, particularly Rain or Shine’s shooting struggles, including an uncharacteristically poor performance from three-point range.
“You will have bad shooting nights,” Guiao said. “Of course we have to give credit to the way they play defense, but we missed some good looks, even our three-point shooting was way, way, way below our average.”
He further pointed to the need for better adjustment to the game’s physicality and the way the contest was officiated, calling those lessons part of the value of having a twice-to-beat advantage.
“Getting used to the physicality, what the refs will call and what the refs will not call—that’s the lesson and that’s the value of having a twice-to-beat advantage,” Guiao said.
Despite the setback, Guiao remained confident that Rain or Shine can regroup, stressing that their overall performance in the conference earned them the twice-to-beat edge.
“Parang may reason naman bakit kami nagka-twice-to-beat,” he said, as the Elasto Painters prepare for the deciding quarterfinal clash against Meralco. (AC)
