The PBA Commissioner’s Office has imposed disciplinary action on an official following a missed call in the closing moments of TNT Tropang 5G’s 99–96 win over Meralco Bolts in Game 5 of the Season 50 Philippine Cup semifinals on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Referee Jeff Tantay has been suspended after league review determined that a defensive foul should have been whistled on TNT forward Calvin Oftana against Meralco guard CJ Cansino with 8.4 seconds remaining in the game.
The play occurred as Cansino attempted a potential go-ahead shot in the final seconds.
According to the PBA technical committee, contact was made during Oftana’s contest, warranting a foul call that was not made. Tantay, who was positioned along the baseline at the time, allowed play to continue, a decision that became a focal point after TNT held on for the three-point victory.
The Commissioner’s Office confirmed the suspension but said it is still evaluating the length of the penalty, including whether Tantay will sit out the remainder of the conference or serve a shorter suspension.
