Raymond Aguilar stays ready as Ginebra leans on matchups vs SMB

Veteran forward Raymond Aguilar could again see action in the semifinals as Barangay Ginebra continues to manage matchups against San Miguel.

According to Tim Cone, Aguilar was deployed out of necessity during Game 4.

“We needed a matchup for Mo Tautuaa. We needed to give Troy a break.” Cone said the coaching staff had full confidence in Aguilar’s understanding of the system.

“He knows our system. He knows what we do. We’re not afraid to put him out there. We don’t think he’s going to make mistakes.”

The decision also came down to size and physicality.

“We didn’t feel like Ralph was big enough to match up with Mo. So we went with Raymond.”

Despite limited minutes, Cone was pleased with Aguilar’s contribution.

“Raymond played well. He did some things. He missed a shot that he’ll normally make in practice.”

Cone added that the missed attempt didn’t change his trust.

“But it was a great shot. It was a great shot to take.” With the series now a best of three, Aguilar remains firmly in the rotation if matchups demand it. “So if the occasion calls for it, definitely he’ll be out there to play.” (JNV)
