Mayweather’s 50-0 not enough to top Pacquiao, says HOF trainer

Hall of Fame trainer Robert Garcia believes Manny Pacquiao’s accomplishments in boxing outweigh Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s undefeated 50-0 record in the debate over the sport’s “Greatest of All Time.”

Garcia said Pacquiao’s connection with fans and global popularity give the Filipino icon an edge over the American fighter.

“I think that Pacquiao was better. Mike Tyson said something to me, ‘to be the GOAT, it is not just because of your boxing record, you gotta be loved and accepted by the fans’ – and everyone loves Pacquiao,” Garcia said in a report first published by boxingnewsonline.net.

“Like Tyson says, [you must be able to] walk down the street without bodyguards, everybody that comes up to you shakes your hand, when you can’t do that, you can’t be a GOAT if you can’t do that.”

Pacquiao and Mayweather first fought in 2015 in the highly anticipated “Fight of the Century: Battle for Greatness,” where Mayweather scored a unanimous decision victory.

More than a decade later, the two boxing legends are reportedly set for a rematch in Las Vegas this September.

Mayweather earlier described the bout as an exhibition match, but Pacquiao disputed the claim and insisted it would be a professional fight, giving him another chance to blemish the American’s unbeaten record.

Pacquiao has already started light training for the scheduled rematch. (AC)
