Alex Eala extra motivated by Birmingham Open triumph

Alex Eala expressed both gratitude and determination after capturing the 2026 Birmingham Open title, saying the achievement motivates her to continue working toward greater success in professional tennis.

The Filipina star made the remarks after joining an illustrious list of past champions, including tennis legends Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Maria Sharapova, and Petra Kvitova.

“It sounds really beautiful of course. All those names that you’ve mentioned are tennis greats. And I am so honored to be lifting this trophy today,” Eala said during the awarding ceremony.

Despite the milestone, Eala stressed that she still has much to accomplish in her career.

“But lifting this trophy does not mean that I will be among the greats yet. So I am motivated to keep working. And I am grateful for the part that this trophy has played in my journey,” she added.

The 21-year-old completed a memorable week in Birmingham by rallying past Czech player Nikola Bartunkova, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, in a thrilling championship match.

Eala also paid tribute to her opponent, acknowledging the competitiveness of the final and praising Bartunkova’s performance throughout the tournament.

“I’d also like to thank Nicola for those kind words. And of course congratulate you for an amazing week. And it’s one of those days I wish we could both win,” Eala said.

“And of course this match was incredible. I think it was anyone’s game. So congratulations. Congratulations to your team,” she added.

The victory marked another breakthrough moment for Philippine tennis, with Eala becoming the latest champion to lift one of the sport’s most historic trophies.

She concluded her speech by thanking the people who have supported her throughout her journey, including her coaching staff and family.

“I’d also like to thank my coach right there. And my team. And of course my family who’s watching from home now. I love you guys,” Eala said.

The Birmingham Open title adds another significant achievement to Eala’s rapidly growing résumé as she continues her rise on the international tennis stage.
