Baterbonia camp seeks to prevent Baldwin from leaving PH

The family of late Ateneo athlete Rene Baterbonia is set to ask the Department of Justice (DOJ) to issue an Immigration Lookout Bulletin Order (ILBO) against Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin as authorities continue investigating the deaths of Baterbonia and fellow student-athlete Divine Adili.

Lawyer Israelito Torreon, counsel for the Baterbonia family, said the planned request is not meant to suggest that Baldwin bears responsibility for the incident. Instead, he explained that the measure would allow authorities to monitor the coach’s travel movements while the investigation remains active.

According to Torreon, the family will formally write the DOJ seeking the issuance of an ILBO, a mechanism that alerts immigration authorities and tracks the entry and departure of a person of interest.

“Dito muna siya sa Pilipinas. Wala po kaming sinasabi na meron siyang liability dito. Para naman po magtuloy-tuloy yung investigasyon, magre-request kami sa Department of Justice na may immigration lookout bulletin order muna sa kanya,” said Torreon.

The request comes as questions continue to surround Baldwin’s training methods following the resurfacing of interviews from former Ateneo players who described the program’s so-called “boot camp” sessions as physically demanding and military-like.

Former Blue Eagle Shaun Ildefonso also recalled an incident in which veteran player Gboy Babilonia nearly drowned during one of the team’s training activities, adding to the scrutiny over the program in the wake of the recent tragedy. (Ray Mark Patriarca)
