Brownlee ruled out of Gilas’ clash with Australia

Gilas Pilipinas will be without naturalized star Justin Brownlee for its upcoming game against Australia in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers on Monday night in Australia.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced that Brownlee will miss the matchup due to a hamstring strain and peroneal tendinopathy on his right leg, as well as swelling and cartilage defects in his left knee.

Brownlee played through pain in Gilas’ previous game against New Zealand, where the Philippines absorbed a heartbreaking 106-102 double-overtime loss at Spark Arena in Auckland.

The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings resident import was limited to just five points as the Tall Blacks focused their defense on the longtime Gilas standout.

Brownlee’s absence leaves a significant void for the national team as it prepares to face the Boomers, with Gilas expected to lean on its local core led by Kevin Quiambao, Juan Gomez de Liano, Dwight Ramos, Carl Tamayo, and the rest of the squad.

Despite the setback against New Zealand, Gilas has already secured a place in the second round of the Asian Qualifiers along with Australia and New Zealand. (AC)
