Louie Alas has been officially appointed as the interim head coach of Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles men’s basketball team should they proceed with their UAAP Season 89 campaign.
Alas, who has served as an assistant coach of the Blue Eagles since 2024, takes over the program as the university continues to deal with the aftermath of the deaths of players Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.
A seasoned coach, Alas owns three NCAA championships with Colegio de San Juan de Letran and last served as head coach of the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters in the PBA.
The university also named former Ateneo standout Nicholas Salva as interim team manager. Joining the coaching staff is Rafael Joey “RJ” Jazul, while Kerby Raymundo is also being eyed as an assistant coach.
As investigations into the deaths of Baterbonia and Adili continue, the Blue Eagles have scrapped their planned overseas training camps and withdrawn from local preseason tournaments. The team, however, will continue its conditioning program in preparation for the upcoming season.
Members of the squad are also scheduled to undergo physical examinations within the next week ahead of the start of the academic year in August. (AC)
