Alex Eala’s historic Wimbledon campaign came to an end after falling to 13th seed Jasmine Paolini of Italy, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in the Round of 16 on Monday at Centre Court.
Despite the loss, Eala completed the best Grand Slam run of her career, becoming the first Filipina to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon.
Paolini took the opening set, 6-4, before Eala responded with a strong second-set performance to level the match after claiming it, 6-4.
The deciding set remained competitive, but the Italian capitalized on key opportunities to pull away and secure a place in the quarterfinals.
Statistics reflected how closely contested the match was. Both players fired two aces, while Eala committed three double faults compared to one by Paolini.
Eala won a higher percentage of points on her first serve at 65 percent, while Paolini finished at 61 percent. However, the Italian held the advantage on second-serve points, winning 67 percent compared to Eala’s 53 percent.
Paolini also proved more efficient on break-point chances, converting four of nine opportunities, while Eala converted three of her 10 break points.
Eala narrowly edged Paolini in receiving points won, 38-37, but the Italian finished with a 101-89 advantage in total points and won 16 games to Eala’s 13.
Paolini also claimed 64 service points and won 12 service games, compared to Eala’s 51 service points and 10 service games.
Although her Wimbledon run ended in the Round of 16, Eala leaves London with several career milestones, including her historic victory over defending champion and world No. 3 Iga Świątek in the third round, a projected career-high ranking, and the distinction of becoming the first Filipina to reach the last 16 of the prestigious grass-court Grand Slam.
