St. John’s Institute, University of Santo Tomas, and Arellano University High School came away with impressive victories as the 2026 Shakey’s Super League Junior National Invitationals got underway on Saturday at the Playtime FilOil Arena in San Juan.
St. John’s Institute opened its campaign with a 25-21, 28-26 sweep of One La Salle to improve to 1-0 in the tournament.
Caera Celis spearheaded the victory, earning MVP of the Match honors after collecting 13 points on 11 attacks and two service aces.
UST also made a strong start, overpowering the Arellano Baby Chiefs, 25-16, 25-12, in straight sets to secure its first win.
Setter Andreaj Tan Chun Bing was named MVP after directing the Junior Golden Tigresses’ offense with 11 excellent sets while adding three service aces.
Pacific Volleyball Academy, meanwhile, survived a tough opening-day test by edging Pusong Azul, 25-23, 17-25, 15-7, to begin its campaign on a winning note.
Lea Aromin powered Pacific Volleyball Academy with 18 points built on 12 attacks and six aces, earning MVP of the Match honors.
However, Pacific Volleyball Academy failed to remain unbeaten later in the day after absorbing a 25-14, 25-21 defeat at the hands of Arellano University High School.
The victory allowed Arellano to bounce back from its opening loss to UST and finish the first day of competition with a 1-1 record, while handing Pacific Volleyball Academy its first defeat.
Ysa Borja led the way for Arellano with 13 points on seven attacks, five aces, and one block to claim MVP of the Match honors. (AC)
