UAAP gives Ateneo more time to submit Aurora tragedy report

The UAAP has extended Ateneo de Manila University’s deadline to submit the results of its investigation into the fatal team-building incident in Aurora, giving the school until July 24 to complete its report.

In a statement released Tuesday, the league said Ateneo requested additional time before the original July 15 deadline to finish its internal probe. The UAAP Board approved the request during its meeting.

The extension comes more than a month after Ateneo men’s basketball players Divine Adili and Rene Baterbonia died during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8.

Despite granting the extension, the UAAP said the preventive measures it previously imposed will remain in effect while investigations continue.

Those barred from participating in all UAAP-related activities include head coach Tab Baldwin, assistant coaches Sandro Soriano, Dean Castano, Jon Jacinto, and Buboy Domingo, strength and conditioning coach CJ Elumba, and physical therapist Jerick Rueca. The suspension was implemented on June 19.

The league emphasized that moving the submission date does not affect the separate investigations being conducted by government agencies, Ateneo’s independent fact-finding body, and the UAAP.

“Any determination of accountability will be based on the findings of the appropriate government agencies, Ateneo’s independent fact-finding body, and the UAAP, in accordance with the UAAP By-Laws and applicable rules and regulations,” the association said.

The UAAP reiterated that the preventive sanctions were imposed to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigations and to ensure due process before any disciplinary action is taken.

The league is expected to review Ateneo’s official findings together with the results of the parallel investigations before deciding on any further action after the university submits its report on July 24. (AC)
