MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV responded to his critics and said he is proud of his recent BBC interview.

“It is what it is. People who watched the full interview (not the spliced one) are entitled to their own opinions. The haters will hate; the believers will believe,” Trillanes said in a statement.

“Personally, knowing the impact of the interview to the global audience and knowing now that ‘Hardtalk’ is very popular yet the most difficult talkshow for any guest, I can honestly say that it is one of the proudest moments in my public life,” he added.

Trillanes was interviewed by BBC “HARDtalk’s” Stephen Sackur last week. During the interview, the BBC anchor asked the senator about his comments against President Rodrigo Duterte.

Sackur said Trillanes’s comments seemed “out of tune” and “inharmonious” with public sentiment since the president was still getting high approval rating despite his war on drugs. However, Trillanes pointed out how Duterte’s ratings declined by 17 percent after he assumed office and that the “bulk of Filipino” are not aware of the damage of the president’s crackdown against drugs.

“The bulk of the Filipino people are not really aware on the ground. The propaganda machine is very, very effective. The bulk of the Filipino public are busy with their day-to-day living. They don’t really get to know the magnitude of the damage Duterte has done,” Trillanes said in the interview with Hardtalk.

Despite the criticisms he earned, Trillanes shrugged off the negative comments.

“Setting aside the trolls, the critics who gave very negative feedback presume that they can do better. But we very well know that they cannot. So, we march forward,” he concluded.
