Courts, the police, lawyers, the prisons - all of these function because we believe that we cannot exact justice upon others with our own capacitities. However, some people believe that this kind of justice - vigilante justice - is necessary.
But look at this case of Otera Bibi, 42, from Bengal, India. A mentally-ill person who has been living with her parents since she wasborn, Bibi was attacked by a mob after she was seen stopping by a hut owned by a local villager named Dilip Ghost. The villagers accused her of trying to abduct the ten-year-old child inside the hut.
They attached her to a tractor and assaulted her for three straight hours using sticks and stones.

Witnesses from the Mithipur-Panagarh village said that she was stripped and humiliated.
After hours of violence, she was taken to a hospital in the Jangipur sub-divisional hospital but she later died for her injuries.
The Murshidabad Superintendent of Police Mukesh said, "A mob beat up the woman after a rumour spread that she was trying to lift children from the village. We have started investigating the murder case. We are trying to identify the people involved in the lynching as well as those who spread the rumour."

Despite the lack of evidence , no one was detained among the several participants in the attack.
