Filipino boxer Nonito Donaire Jr. suffered a decision loss against Mexico’s Alexandro Santiago during their WBC bantamweight title bout in Las Vegas on Sunday, Manila time.
The Mexican survived some heavy blows from Donaire before hammering out a unanimous decision to win the vacant bantamweight title.
Judges saw it 115-113, 116-112, and 116-112, all in favor of Santiago.
The bout took place on the Showtime Pay-Per-View portion of the Errol Spence Jr.-Terence Crawford undercard at T-Mobile Arena.
With the win, Santiago foiled Donaire’s bid to become a three-time bantamweight champion.
It was Donaire’s first fight since his devastating second-round knockout loss to Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue.
