The Angolans dominated the rebounding department on Sunday, costing Gilas Pilipinas the game.
Coach Chot Reyes cited that the bigger Angolans were successful in boxing out the Gilas big men.
The Bruno Fernando-led Angola got a 43-39 rebounding edge, but 20 of their boards came on the offensive end.
It led to 14 second-chance points, to the detriment of Gilas.
The nationals, on the other hand, had just 12 offensive boards and eight second-chance points.
“We got hammered on the boards; we gave up 20 offensive rebounds,” said Reyes after their 80-70 defeat. “We took care of the ball a lot better tonight, but we just couldn’t make shots.”
It was their second straight loss in the tournament, which dented their chance of reaching the second round.
