Hakuoh thwarts Ateneo’s WUBS title retention bid

Japan’s Hakuoh University toppled Ateneo de Manila University with a 73-58 verdict in their semifinal clash in the World University Basketball Series on Saturday night at the National Yoyogi Stadium in Tokyo.

Despite managing to keep it tight in the first two quarters, the Blue Eagles collapsed, particularly in the payoff period.

Hakuoh University stuck with its defensive tactics in the third canto, outscoring Ateneo by one point, 8-7.

Then, in the fourth period, the Japanese side launched a 30-18 tear to close out the Blue Eagles.

With the loss, Ateneo was relegated to the bronze medal match.

The Blue Eagles take on Radford University, which suffered a 79-75 defeat to National Chengchi University, in an effort to salvage their campaign.

Ateneo earlier opened their title-retention bid with a 38-point beating of the University of Sydney.
