Spain dominates Luka Doncič-led Slovenia in friendly game

Reigning champions Spain displayed its strong form as it dominated Slovenia, 99-79, in a friendly game on Friday night (Saturday, Manila time) in Malaga, Spain.

Despite the retirement of the Gasol brothers, Spain demonstrated its potential to compete for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia.

Santi Aldama spearheaded the offense with 18 points, six assists, and seven rebounds, while Willy and Juancho Hernangomez each contributed 17 points.

Slovenia, behind Luka Doncič, zoomed to a 23-10 start in the opening quarter, but defending champion Spain slowly clawed its way back before establishing a 51-41 halftime lead.

Doncič and his teammates responded in the third period, closing within four points, but Spain once again gained momentum as they broke the game wide open, building its biggest lead of 20 points.

Slovenia was led by Doncič, who had an injury scare during the first half but returned to the court to finish the match with 17 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
