Shorthanded Vietnam outplays Pinay spikers in SEA V-League

The Philippine women’s volleyball team faced a four-set loss to an undermanned Vietnam side with a score of 19-25, 27-25, 29-31, and 14-25 during the second leg of the 2023 Southeast Asian VLeague on a Saturday afternoon at the Chiang Mai 700th Anniversary Sports Complex in Thailand.

Even with the absence of Vietnam’s star player, Trần Thị Thanh Thúy, the Pinay Spikers found themselves outmatched, experiencing their second consecutive loss in the tournament.

Following a loss in the first set, the Pinay Spikers displayed determination in the second frame, managing to reach a tie at 25-all. Alyssa Solomon then propelled Team Philippines to the set victory with her impactful hit.

The Pinay Spikers kept pace with Vietnam, leveling the score at 29-all through a conversion by Solomon. However, they relinquished two consecutive points, enabling Vietnam to seize a 2-1 set lead.

Vietnam, on the other hand, ensured they didn’t face a similar issue in the fourth set. They surged ahead with a 22-11 lead, effectively taking control of the match away from the Philippines.

Under the guidance of head coach Jorge Edson Souza de Brito, Team Philippines will aim to prevent another shutout as they conclude the second leg against Indonesia at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
