Spain’s Alcaide edges PH’s Raga for European Open crown

Spain’s David Alcaide hammered out a 13-12 squeaker against Filipino cue artist Anton Raga in the finals to win the European Open Pool Championship at Hotel Esperanto, Fulda, Germany, early Monday morning (Manila time).

The two teams engaged in a close battle, with neither of them holding a lead of more than one rack.

Raga reached the hill first when he cleaned out the last three balls in the 23rd rack for a 12-11 lead. But the Spaniard managed to take the 24th rack to even the scores.

In the final rack, Alcaide engaged Raga in a brief safety battle. The Filipino got the better of it but failed to sink the 6-ball in the middle pocket, allowing the Spaniard to take over and win his first title since the 2019 World Pool Masters.

Prior to his title defeat, Raga got past the host country’s Joshua Filler in the semifinals.
