Jalen Brunson’s perfect game carries USA past Spain in friendly

The United States men’s basketball team relied on a fourth-quarter breakaway to defeat reigning FIBA World Cup champions Spain, 98-88, in a friendly game on Sunday (Monday, Manila time) in Malaga, Spain.

Jalen Brunson anchored the offense for Team USA with 21 points on a perfect 9-of-9 shooting from the field, as they remained perfect in their three pre-World Cup matches.

Mikal Bridges scored 12 points, while Brandon Ingram, Austin Reaves, and Anthony Edwards each added 11, and Tyrese Haliburton had 12 assists in just under 22 minutes off the bench for the USA.

Holding to a slim 73-72 advantage after three quarters, the Americans kicked off the fourth quarter with a huge run from Ingram and Brunson as they built a 97-84 lead and never looked back.

Santi Aldama led the way for Spain with 14 points, Willy Hernangomez scored 13 markers, and Alex Abrines and Juancho Hernangomez ended with 12 and 11, respectively.

Team USA will next head to Abu Dhabi for two friendly matches against Greece and Germany before heading to Manila for the FIBA World Cup competition.
