Cone: If we’re to play the Asiad tomorrow, we’re not going to be good

Interim Gilas Pilipinas coach Tim Cone admitted that the national team is currently in the adjustment stage of their preparations for the upcoming Asian Games.

“We’re trying to implement a lot of stuff, so there’s a lot of confusion at the moment. That’s to be expected. Deep down, the guys, we don’t have to be good today; we don’t have to be good tomorrow, said Cone, who only has a week and a half before the Hangzhou Asian Games to prepare the team, in an interview on PlayitRightTV on Wednesday.

“We’re not good right now. If we’re playing the Asian Games tomorrow, wow, look out! We’re not going to be very good.”

But Cone said despite that, the team is in good spirits and is ready to take on everything he has lined up to make sure they will be in competitive form when they play their first game on Sept. 26.

“We’re just trying to work to be good, taking the day-to-day process, and trying to elevate our game and our understanding (of the system).”

Gilas’ first assignment will be against Bahrain. It will be a must-win game for the nationals, who are hoping to redeem themselves after a disappointing stint in the recently concluded FIBA World Cup.

But the Gilas coach said they needed to be patient.

“In another week and a half, 10 days, 12 days, I think we’re going to be where we want to be,” said Cone.
