Notable misses in PBA rookie draft: Larupay, Gimpayan, Baste boys

Standouts from the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League, Omar Larupay and Jaymar Gimpayan, were among the notable players who were not selected during the PBA Season 48 Rookie Draft on Sunday night at the Market! Market! in Taguig City.

Larupay, known for his impressive double-double performances with the Iloilo United Royals, had previously been recognized as part of the NCAA’s Best Defensive Team during his time with the Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates.

Former PBA coach Chris Gavina had likened Gimpayan to Calvin Abueva in a Facebook post prior to the draft. Gimpayan had put up strong performances with the Imus SV Squad in the MPBL and the Boracay team in the Pilipinas Super League, showcasing his potential in the basketball scene.

Despite their talent and potential, none of the 12 PBA teams selected San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags players Michael Are, Romel Calahat Jr., and Ammar Cosari during the rookie draft. These players are set to return to their school to compete in NCAA Season 99 starting next week.

Numerous aspiring players were also not selected in the recent PBA rookie draft. These undrafted players include Ryan Paule Costelo, Shaquille Imperial, Patrick Jamison, Leon Lorenzana, Michael Macion, John Mahari, Jaybie Mantilla, Darrell Menina, Egie Boy Mojica, Irven Palencia, Nikko Panganiban, Frederick Pasturan, Jeric Serrano, Laurenz Victoria, King Destacamento, King Rodney Fuentes, Fletcher Galvez, Michael Lazarte, Alwin Margallo, and Buenaventura Raflores.

Alynn Roncal, Hero Tomilloso, Reeve Ugsang, Richard Velchez, Alfonso Ventura-Benson, Krenz Nestor Carlos, Renzo Galdo, Joshua Gonzales, John Miguel Gregg, Marco Guzman, Raphael Mallari, Darrell Manliquez, Sem Maraan, Lean Martel, Mico Pallares, Jordyn Perez, Reinier Quinga, Noel Santos, Joel Sapinit, and James Tremocha.
As free agents, they now have the opportunity to participate in tryouts with their desired teams, aiming to secure a spot on the roster for PBA Season 48, which kicks off on November 5.
