Topex Robinson: DLSU veterans eager to showcase their skills in UAAP Season 86

Michael “Topex” Robinson, head coach of the De La Salle University Green Archers, mentioned that his seasoned players are exceptionally motivated to make their mark in the upcoming UAAP Season 86.

The former PBA coach highlighted that the returning Green Archers have experienced disappointments in past UAAP seasons when they fell short in the Final Four, and this year they’re determined to turn the tide.

The roster of returning players for the Green Archers this season includes Mark Nonoy, Evan Nelle, Kevin Quiambao, Joaqui Manuel, and Michael Phillips.

“Most of them were recruited by Coach Derrick (Pumaren), and I’m just inheriting that lineup,” said Robinson. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead the team, and now, I hope—barring injuries and other issues—we can become a competitive team.”

“The veteran players—they’ve been through a lot, and they know the feeling of not making it. So, it’s a given for them that they want to prove themselves this season,” Robinson said.

Robinson added that while there may have been an order from DLSU booster Enrique Razon Jr. of the ICTSI to secure the championship ring for the Green Archers, he emphasized that it will be a gradual process.

“I don’t want to pretend that I can guarantee a spot in the Final Four. It doesn’t work that way here. It’s part of the challenge and opportunity to coach a successful program like DLSU,” Robinson said.

“Just like (Mr. Enrique) Razon said, there are only two types of people in this world: winners and losers. There is no in-between, so we always have to strive to be the best. Nobody wants to associate themselves with losers, as he mentioned,” he added.

“It’s a responsibility that we have to shoulder as staff. I feel fortunate to have coaches who are winners here, so it’s a matter of us working together and guiding this team to the finals,” he continued.

Seven years ago, Jeron Teng and Benoit Mbala led the Green Archers to their most recent UAAP championship victory, with coaching by Aldin Ayo, who currently mentors the Converge FiberXers.
