Alas Pilipinas national men’s basketball team opened their 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Men campaign with a 25-19, 25-22, and 25-22 loss to China on Sunday night (Monday in Manila) in Manama, Bahrain.
The Philippine men’s volleyball team tried their best to keep in step with China, but Asia’s No. 5 ranked squad was just too much as they dropped to a 0-1 record in the three-team pool.
With China holding to a 17-14 lead, Alas Pilipinas responded with a run from Jau Umandal to cut the deficit to 16-17, but a crucial net touch called on Alas gave their opponent an 18-16 lead.
The Philippines rallied to within 21-23 before China reached match point, but Jade Disquitado salvaged one for Alas before China sealed the victory with an attack point.
Alas Pilipinas is in a must-win situation against host Bahrain on Monday night (Tuesday in Manila) if they want to secure a spot in the quarterfinal round.
During their previous encounter, the Philippine team suffered a 25-20, 25-17, and 25-23 loss to Bahrain in the classification phase of the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Men.
