Aaron Fuller converted a go-ahead basket as the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters escaped with a 106-105 win over the De La Salle University Green Archers in the 2024 Kadayawan Invitational Basketball Tournament on Thursday night at the USEP Gym in Davao City.
Trailing 104-105 to the Green Archers, Beau Belga passed the ball to Fuller in the paint for an easy conversion, giving the Painters a 106-105 advantage with 42 seconds remaining.
The Green Archers still had a chance to snatch the lead late in the game, but the Painters’ Gian Mamuyac swiped the ball from Kevin Quiambao, who was about to attempt a three-pointer.
With the victory, the Painters tied the Converge FiberXers on top with a 1-0 win-loss slate, while the defending champions, the Green Archers, dropped to 0-1 along with the Phoenix Fuel Masters.
The Painters surged to an early double-digit lead in the opening half, but the Green Archers slowly clawed their way back until they took a slim 55-51 advantage heading into the break.
The game became tight for both squads in the second half, with the Green Archers protecting a four-point lead in the fourth quarter before the Painters leaned on conversions by Mamuyac, Fuller, and Andrei Caracut to pull off the victory.
The Painters fans who watched the match online expressed relief after the Joseller “Yeng” Guiao-led team pulled off a close win against the talent-rich Green Archers.
“Amateur against all pro? Wow, good for both sides; kasi ang La Salle trained abroad din, kaya no wonder hirap ang Ros kahit meron import.”
“Maganda combination ni Belga at Fuller, isang magaling pumasa at isang magaling pwumesto at masipag talaga.”
“Felix parang PG na shooter, pero parang iwas sa banggaan, pero di agad lalabas laro ni lemetti baka sa 2nd conference pa ‘yan maramdaman.”
“Maganda performance may halong malas lang. Wag niyo tignan score kung nakadikit man kalaban. Ang tignan niyo mga kombinasyon at ikot ng bola.”
“’Yung mga players ng La Salle pro ready na mga ‘yan talaga.”
“Naku Belga kung wala import nyo talo kayo. Muntikan pa kayo ah.”
“Sipag talaga sa rebound ni Fuller bonus n lng points.”
“Muntikan pa matalo sa college team, but still a win! Thanks to Big Beau for the nice assist to Aaron Fuller winning basket and also the winning steal of Jhonard Clarito! Let’s go, ROS!”
The 2024 Kadayawan Invitational Basketball Tournament is a four-day pocket tournament that is part of the annual Kadayawan Festival in Davao City.
