The Philippine Basketball Association’s (PBA) move to introduce a four-point shot for the upcoming season could serve as a trendsetter for other basketball leagues around the world, United States national women’s basketball team star Sabrina Ionescu said.
In an interview with American sports writer Len Werle, the three-point gunner of the WNBA’s New York Liberty expressed support for the PBA’s innovation, saying that it can help bring basketball to a different level.
“That’s pretty cool,” said Ionescu. “I mean, the more we can just continue to evolve the game, it could bring a different level to our game here, and who knows, maybe one day (in the WNBA).”
The @pbaconnect adapting a four-point line… #SabrinaIonescu wouldn’t mind having one either.

Ionescu, who holds the record for the most three-pointers in a single WNBA season with 128 in 2023, is expected to be one of the key players for Team USA in their gold medal defense at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The PBA recently announced the move to implement the four-point shot beginning in the 2024 Governors’ Cup next month, making the league the first-ever 5×5 professional basketball league to adopt the said long-range shot.
The four-point shot was first tested by the PBA during the 2023 PBA All-Star Weekend match in Passi City, Iloilo, last year and was repeated during this year’s PBA All-Star in Bacolod City.
An arc measuring 27 feet will be put on the court during games, while the three-point line, which measures 23 feet, will stay.
