FIBA World Cup pre-qualifier: Gilas Pilipinas women fell short to Brazil

Gilas Pilipinas national women’s basketball team fell short of a massive upset after a 77-74 defeat to Brazil in the FIBA Women’s World Cup pre-qualifying tournament on Monday night at the Kigali Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.

With the score tied at 73-all with 1:52 left in the game, Brazil took a slim 74-73 lead on a split free throw by Leticia Soares. Gilas Pilipinas women then muffed three free throws before Afril Bernardino split her free throws for a 74-all score.

The Gilas Pilipinas women had a chance to take the lead, but Bernardino misfired from close range. She then committed a foul on Brazil’s Aline Moura, who split her free throws for a slim 75-74 lead.

In the next possession, Gilas Pilipinas women’s Khate Castillo failed to connect on her three-point attempt. Brazil then sealed the win on two free throws by Cacá Martins with a second left.

Soares top-scored for the No. 8-ranked Brazil with 15 points; Emanuely de Oliveira added 13 markers; and Maria Albiero and Martins contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Jack Animam led the No. 40-ranked Gilas Pilipinas women with a double-double of 18 points and 21 rebounds to go with four blocks, while Bernardino and Naomi Panganiban added 14 and 13 points, respectively.

The Gilas Pilipinas women will attempt to bounce back against No. 16-ranked Hungary at 11 p.m. on August 20 before concluding their group stage game against the No. 25-ranked Senegal at 5 p.m. on August 22.
