Charles Tiu on Converge facing SMB: ‘Bilog naman ang bola’

Converge FiberXers assistant coach Charles Tiu said the team will give their best as they begin their PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinals series against the San Miguel Beermen tonight at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

According to Tiu, reaching the quarterfinals is already a significant achievement for the FiberXers, especially after finishing last in the previous PBA season. However, they are determined to pull off an upset against the formidable Beermen.

“It feels nice to be in the playoffs, alam niyo naman saan nanggaling itong Converge last season; it was a tough season, and to finish with six wins this conference is already big,” Tiu said in an interview with DWAR Abante Radyo’s SPORTSNOW program.

“We are happy to make it to the quarterfinals, pero siyempre we still want to compete; I mean, bilog naman ang bola so gusto naming lumaban as much as possible,” he added. “San Miguel is a different beef, but, hopefully, we can pull off some upset somehow.”

Tiu further said it never crossed the FiberXers’ mind to intentionally drop their game against the Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots to possibly avoid the Beermen as they are ready to face whoever is in front of them.

“Well sa amin naman kasi palagi kaming play to win eh, we know its hard, and we believe may karma din ‘yan, and for underdog teams like us, whether San Miguel or Rain or Shine, dehado din kami eh,” Tiu said.

“It is not like we are the favored team trying to choose a weaker team; both teams are really good. Rain or Shine are playing at such a high level and San Miguel is San Miguel, so it does not matter malakas pa rin pareho,” he added.

The FiberXers finished as the No. 3 seed in Group A with a 6-4 win-loss record, while the Beermen emerged as the No. 2 seed in Group B with a similar 6-4 slate.
