Ex-Gilas coach Tab Baldwin considered for New Zealand post

Former Gilas Pilipinas head coach Thomas “Tab” Baldwin is reportedly being considered for the head coaching position of the New Zealand Tall Blacks.

According to Marc Hinton of The Post, Baldwin has emerged as a potential candidate to replace current Tall Blacks head coach Pero Cameron.

“Baldwin did not respond to The Post’s query about his interest in a potential return. However, well-placed sources have confirmed that he has expressed interest,” stated in The Post’s report.

“It’s understood that Baldwin, having observed veteran coaches Brian Goorjian (Australia), Svetislav Pešić (Serbia), and Vincent Collet (France) at the Paris Olympics, has been inspired to consider a return to the international arena,” the report added.

Baldwin previously handled the New Zealand squad from 2001 to 2006 before he arrived in the country to serve as consultant to then Gilas Pilipinas head coach Vincent “Chot” Reyes in 2013.

The 66-year-old Baldwin was named Gilas head coach twice, from 2015 to 2016 and in 2021 to 2022; in both times it was Reyes who took over the national team coaching spot from him.

While in the country, Baldwin also led the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles to four UAAP men’s basketball tournament championships. He has a live contract with the school until the end of UAAP Season 87.
