FEU-D overpowers Ateneo to remain solo second

The Far Eastern University-Diliman Baby Tamaraws extended their winning streak to three games with an 80-61 rout of the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eaglets in the UAAP Season 87 Junior High School Basketball Tournament on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Mic Pingris, son of retired PBA forward Jean Marc Pingris, stepped up for FEU-D with a career-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting as they surged to solo second place in the standings with a 5-1 win-loss slate.

Anton Lopez contributed an all-around performance of 16 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and six steals, while CP Miranda finished with 15 points and five assists for the Baby Tamaraws.

Baby Tamaraws head coach Muriel Garcia stated that the victory came as a relief, given the challenges the team faced in the days leading up to the match against the Blue Eaglets.

“Actually, pinag-aaralan namin kahapon ni Coach Denok (Miranda) kung paano ikot ng tao kasi ang daming injuries sa amin,” Garcia said in a post-game interview.

“Ni-remind lang namin ‘yung players namin na keep on playing, keep on playing, keep on playing, especially on defense (and) keep on pushing, keep on pushing the ball, and we finished the job,” he added.

Zane Kallos, the son of former San Sebastian head coach John Kallos, still managed 12 rebounds and six assists but struggled to find his rhythm as the Blue Eaglets dropped to 3-2.

Meanwhile, the De La Salle-Zobel Junior Archers stunned the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs, 83-80, to end its three-game losing streak.

Melvin Tailan led DLSZ with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists; Vince Magan added 21 points, six rebounds, and four assists; and Ram Luna, who made the crucial baskets, finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, and four assists as they moved up to 3-2.
