Marcial admits he nearly quit boxing after shock exit in Paris

Filipino Olympian Eumir Marcial revealed he experienced depression shortly after his loss at the Paris Olympics.

Marcial felt devastated by his decision loss to Uzbekistan’s Turabek Khabibullaev in the round of 16 of the men’s 80kg division, to the point that he almost considered quitting boxing.

“After my Olympic campaign, I was quite depressed and wanted to end my boxing career,” Marcial said in his social media post.
It was a painful defeat for Marcial, who had put his professional career on hold to remain in the amateur ranks and compete in Paris.

What changed his mind were the encouraging words he received from Filipino fans, even after his elimination from the Olympics.

“Thanks to all my Filipino fans who have supported and who made an effort in sending me encouraging messages. Pasensya na kung hindi ko kayo narereplyan lahat mga idol. Pero tuloy ang laban! Let’s Go 💪🔥#December,” said Marcial, citing his next pro bout in December.
