Criticisms persist despite PVL’s explanation, video of disputed Akari vs PLDT call

Despite an explanation from Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Commissioner Sherwin Malonzo, supported by a slow-motion video, volleyball fans remain convinced that the decision not to call a net touch violation on Akari’s Ezra Madrigal during the semifinal match between the Akari Chargers and PLDT High Speed Hitters was “unfair.”

Following the match on Saturday, the PVL posted a scenario from the International Volleyball Federation’s (FIVB) casebook that Commissioner Malonzo used to justify the referees’ decision.

Alongside the photo, a video of the controversial rally was shared, edited to highlight each player’s movement in alignment with the basis for the call.

After the video was presented, fans began questioning why the PVL rejected PLDT’s request for a net touch challenge.

“Pinost niyo sa dito dahil? Hahahahaha.

“Okay sige given na ganyan, bakit di pinakita yang challenge na yan during the game???? Dahil???”— @bxtchdumpjyc/X

“So then, why you didnt replay this video during the game????”—RRey Shel/FB

“If thats the case, the refs should have explained it right there and then.” — Leah Mart/FB

“Bakit denied ang challenge? It was denied; the point should be replayed? But rather, it was awarded to Akari??”—Raven Domingo/FB

“Booooooo!!! You denied the challenge but awarded the point to the opponent. When videos came out that there was really a net touch, binanatan ng FIVB rule… Again, you DENIED the challenge.” — Raquel Chua/FB

Ironically, the discussion didn’t stop there. Some fans went as far as suggesting that the Creamline Cool Smashers commit the same net fault in their upcoming finals match against Akari, arguing it wouldn’t be considered a violation.

They also questioned why this ruling was upheld now when, in the history of net touch challenges in the PVL, all previous instances had been called violations.

“Pero with the other matches na same scenario tinatawagan ng ref, pero this time valid rule sa FIVB? 🤡” — Moi Yumol/FB

— Lyncar Villanueva/FB
