Mark Nonoy overcame a first-half injury to lead the Iloilo United Royals to a 72-69 victory over the Valenzuela Classics Dynacast in the 2024 MPBL season on Tuesday night at the WES Arena in Valenzuela City.
After sustaining a hip injury in the opening half, Nonoy returned for the United Royals in the fourth quarter and unloaded eight straight points to turn a 60-64 deficit to a 68-64 advantage with under two minutes in the game.
Valenzuela responded with a triple from Dennis Santos and a layup from Darell Manliguez to take a 69-68 lead, but Iloilo got a conversion from Leo de Vera to regain the lead before Nonoy wrapped up the win with two free throws.
Nonoy finished with 14 points, with 10 coming in the fourth quarter, to go with two rebounds, one assist, and a steal as the also-ran United Royals notched back-to-back wins for a 10-17 win-loss slate.
“Na-feel ko na ‘yung mga teammates ko gusto lumaban eh, ilang games na lang ‘yung natitira sa season namin so gusto naming tapusin na may winning streak,” Nonoy said during his Player of the Game interview.
“May iniinda ako pero kinaya ko kasi need ako ng team, so ‘yun nga nakapag contribute kami and nanalo kami, sobrang saya na matulungan silang makabalik sa winning track and sana mas maging better team sila next season,” he added.
Clint Doliguez led the way for the United Royals with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists, and a steal, while Ry dela Rosa chipped in 12 markers, including two outside conversions.
Santos tallied 16 points, seven rebounds, and two assists to lead Valenzuela City; Manliguez added 12 markers, while Reeve Ugsang ended with 10 points and 13 rebounds. They dropped to a 13-14 win-loss slate.
Meanwhile, Jeff Comia finished with 12 points as the Pangasinan Heatwaves (12-15) edged the Sarangani Marlins (5-21), 88-70, while the Abra Weavers (17-10) walloped the Bicolandia Oragons (3-24), 129-68, behind the 21 points of Roi Sumang.
