Alex Eala secured a hard-fought 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 victory over China’s Gao Xinyu in the opening round of the WTA Guangzhou Open qualifiers on Sunday.
It was a major confidence booster for the Pinay, following her disappointing campaign in the Ningbo Open.
To advance to the main draw, she must now face Russia’s Elena Pridankina on Monday.
Eala’s last victory on the pro tour was in the final qualifying round of the WTA 500 Guadalajara Open in Mexico on September 9.
In her Instagram post, Eala described her win over Gao as difficult but rewarding.

#wta250 #guangzhouopen,” said the Pinay netter.
