Filipino-American cagers Boogie Ellis and Ron Harper Jr. did not secure roster spots ahead of the 2024-2025 NBA regular season, which begins next Tuesday (Wednesday morning in Manila).
Ellis, an undrafted prospect from the 2024 NBA Rookie Draft, was released by the Sacramento Kings, while Harper was cut by the Boston Celtics.
The release of Ellis was unexpected, especially after his strong performance during the NBA Summer League and pre-season. The 23-year-old guard played in three of the Kings’ five pre-season games, averaging 9.0 points and 1.3 rebounds in 12.8 minutes per game.
He also showcased his shooting ability, hitting 41.7 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc.
Harper, meanwhile, did not secure a spot on the Celtics’ 18-player roster as they prepare for their title defense.
The son of Chicago Bulls legend Ron Harper Sr. had been signed to an Exhibit-10 contract by the Celtics after recovering from a shoulder injury. Despite this, he was unable to make the final cut for the regular season.
The young Harper was a two-way contract player for the Toronto Raptors for two NBA seasons before he was released by the team last year due to his season-ending injury.
Both Ellis and Harper are expected to play in the NBA G-League following their releases.
Currently, there are two active Filipino-American players in the NBA—Jordan Clarkson of the Utah Jazz and Jalen Green of the Houston Rockets.
