Prince Cariño takes charge in 4th as FEU-D prevails over UST

Prince Cariño took charge in the fourth quarter as the Far Eastern University-Diliman Baby Tamaraws scored a 90-83 win over the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs in the UAAP Season 87 Boys Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Cariño, a 15-year-old center, scored 16 of his 28 points in the final quarter to go with eight rebounds and three assists as the Baby Tamaraws concluded the first round of eliminations with a 6-1 win-loss record.

“Ang masasabi ko lang masaya kami ng buong team kasi pinagtrabahuan namin makuha itong second place pagkatapos ng first round. Pero malayo pa ‘yung tatahakin namin,” Cariño said.

CP Miranda chipped in 18 points, five assists, and six rebounds; Lakay Pasinos contributed a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds; and Mark Dulin ended with 11 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, and three steals for FEU-D.

Down 76-78 with over three minutes left, Cariño carried the Baby Tamaraws on his back, scoring seven consecutive points to push FEU-D to an 83-78 advantage with just over two minutes left.

The Tiger Cubs fought back to cut the deficit to 83-81, but conversions from Cariño and Miranda widened the Baby Tamaraws’ advantage to 89-81 with 26.1 seconds remaining.

Canapi led the Tiger Cubs with 29 points—hitting 6-of-14 from beyond the arc; Andwele Cabañero added 24 points and 12 rebounds; and Dustin Bathan had 12 points, three rebounds, and seven assists.

Meanwhile, the National University Nazareth School Bullpups edged out the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eaglets in a tight 91-89 contest, concluding the first round tied for fifth with identical 3-4 records.

Chester Tulabut, who finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds, tied the game at 89-89 with just 13.3 seconds left before sinking the go-ahead free throws with 6.6 seconds remaining for NUNS.
