Jack Santiago: UE to appeal Precious Momowei’s ejection

The University of the East Red Warriors are set to appeal the ejection of foreign student-athlete Precious Momowei during their 76-67 loss to the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers on Saturday night.

Red Warriors head coach Jack Santiago stated that the school will send a letter to the UAAP Commissioner’s Office to appeal Momowei’s ejection, which could result in a one-game suspension and disqualification from individual awards.

“Yes, for sure, the school will write a letter regarding Momowei and, of course, hindi natin alam kung ano ang magiging final decision,” Santiago told the media in a post-game interview.

“We are hopeful that the decision will be in our favor, but at the end of the day, kailangan pa rin naming (maghanda for our next game against the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles),” he added.

Momowei was first called for an unsportsmanlike foul in the second quarter for his unintentional hit on the face of Growling Tigers center Mo Tounkara during a rebound battle.

The Red Warriors center was once again called for an unsportsmanlike foul late in the fourth quarter after accidentally elbowing the face of Growling Tigers’ forward Angelo Crisostomo, who went down with blood near his right eye.

Currently in third place with a 6-6 win-loss record, the Red Warriors must win at least one of their remaining matches against the Blue Eagles and the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons to secure a Final Four spot.

However, Santiago mentioned that the Red Warriors are prepared to play without Momowei against the Blue Eagles on Wednesday, November 13, if the UAAP Commissioner’s Office does not grant their appeal for Momowei’s ejection.

“Well, hindi naman na kami bago sa ganun, remember last season we (played a game) without import also, but ang maganda lang diyan sa nakita namin kanina is that we saw the other players step up,” Santiago said.

“Well, five on five lang naman ang laro eh, we just have to prepare,” he added. “Ateneo is out of the contention already, ayaw naman nila maglaro; for sure, they want to finish the season on a winning note.”
