University of the East Red Warriors center Precious Momowei personally apologized to the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers for his two unsportsmanlike fouls during their UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament game on Saturday night.
The Red Warriors’ foreign student-athlete went to the Growling Tigers’ dugout to express his apologies, particularly to their big men, Mo Tounkara and Angelo Crisostomo.
Momowei explained to the media afterward that his hit on Crisostomo, which resulted in a cut near the latter’s right eye, was unintentional.
“I went there to apologize,” Momowei said. “I was going for a basket, and maybe my hands accidentally hit (Crisostomo’s face). It was an unintentional hit.”
Red Warriors head coach Jack Santiago also believed that Momowei’s hit on Crisostomo was accidental.
“He is a nice kid, so, for sure, he does not mean na masaktan ‘yun, accidental talaga,” Santiago said. “We did not order him to apologize (to the Growling Tigers); he went there on his own decision.”
Momowei was first called for an unsportsmanlike foul in the second quarter for an unintentional hit on Tounkara during a rebound battle. He was again penalized with the same foul for elbowing Crisostomo in the face during the fourth quarter.
In the UAAP, ejection results in an automatic one-game suspension and disqualification from receiving individual awards. However, the Red Warriors are planning to appeal the decision before the UAAP Commissioner’s Office.
