The University of Santo Tomas Junior Golden Booters recovered from a goal down to defeat the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eaglets, 3-1, in the UAAP Season 87 Boys’ Football Tournament on Saturday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.
Ateneo drew first blood courtesy of a conversion from Andres Dumlao in the 31st minute, but UST responded with an equalizer from Joshua Balliner just before the halftime break.
Come the second half, Jessy Ramasola gave the Junior Golden Booters their first taste of the lead with an excellent finish inside the Blue Eagles’ box. UST then wrapped up the victory through John Mark Visitacion’s penalty kick in the 83rd minute.
UST assistant coach David Basa said this performance is a good development ahead of the team’s rematch against Far Eastern University-Diliman next week as well as with the Final Four on the horizon.
“Siyempre gusto namin makabawi (sa FEU-D) pero iniisip namin ‘yung pinaka-importante, which is (the) semi-finals,” said Basa after the game. “Maganda siyempre kung manalo pero kailangan namin maging mautak when it comes to the next game.”
Meanwhile, PAREF Southridge Admirals moved one step closer to entering the Final Four after dismantling their fellow guest team, Claret School of Quezon City Red Roosters, 3-0.
Kale Javier drew first blood for the Admirals with his connection in the 31st minute, followed by his second goal in the 62nd minute. Francis Poticano then wrapped up the rout with a connection in the 68th minute.
Jacob Keleghan and Jerriemy Biton, on the other hand, knocked down a goal each as the FEU-D Baby Tamaraws blanked the De La Salle Zobel Junior Green Booters, 2-0.
Currently, FEU-D is on top of the standings with 25 points, followed by UST with 22, De La Salle Zobel with 13, Southridge with 10, Ateneo with nine, and Claret at last place without a point.
