Alex Eala couldn’t hold back her tears after making history as the first Filipina to reach a WTA Tour final, following a gutsy 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 win over France’s Varvara Gracheva in the semifinals of the 2025 Eastbourne Open.
“I’m like, super, super happy because that was a tough match,” said a visibly emotional Eala in her post-match interview, as shared by ABS-CBN’s Dyan Castillejo.
“There were really tough moments when she [Gracheva] was playing well, and I sometimes didn’t know how to get hold of it, so I’m really happy with winning.”
Both Eala and Gracheva came through the qualifying rounds to make it to the final four, adding an extra layer of grit to their semifinal showdown.
“It was a challenge for both of us, physically and mentally. We both came from quali, and she’s a really solid player,” added Eala, who improved her live WTA ranking to a career-high No. 64.
