Pinay tennis ace Alex Eala continued her giant-slaying run at the Lexus Eastbourne Open, pulling off another upset with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over world No. 42 Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine late Thursday.
The 20-year-old Filipina, who recently hit a career-high no. 68 in the live WTA rankings, was in complete control from start to finish. She nearly blanked Yastremska in the opening set, giving up just one game.
Yastremska put up more resistance in the second frame, but Eala’s poise and precision proved too much, sealing the Filipina’s spot in the tournament semifinals.
The win comes just a day after Eala advanced via walkover against world No. 4 Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia. Ostapenko retired while trailing, 0-6, 6-2, 3-2.
With Wimbledon looming next week, Eala is building serious momentum ahead of her much-anticipated debut at the Grand Slam.
