Fans react with humor to PBA teams in Kadayawan tournament

Fans had a hilarious take on the participation of four PBA teams in the 40th Kadayawan Festival tournament in Davao, which runs from August 21 to 24, as part of preparations for the league’s 50th season.

With no San Miguel Corporation squads (Barangay Ginebra, San Miguel, and Magnolia) and the absence of two other MVP-owned teams (TNT Tropang Giga 5G and Meralco), the field is left open for the NLEX Road Warriors, Phoenix Fuel Masters, Blackwater Bossing, and Converge FiberXers.

Reactions poured in after the PBA announced on social media:

In recent years, heavyweights like San Miguel, Ginebra, and TNT have dominated the Governors’ Cup, Commissioner’s Cup, and Philippine Cup.

According to the PBA, the Kadayawan Invitational tips off Thursday at the University of Southeastern Philippines. Blackwater faces Phoenix at 5 p.m., followed by NLEX against Converge at 7 p.m.

The tournament also marks the coaching debut of Willy Wilson with Phoenix, alongside the addition of sophomore guard Francis Escandor, a proud native of Davao.

Last year, Rain or Shine swept the competition, capping it with a 136-118 victory over the De La Salle Green Archers in the finals, where Andrei Caracut bagged MVP honors.

This year’s format will see each team play three games in the eliminations. The top two squads advance to Sunday’s championship, while the bottom two will battle for third place.

The pocket tournament is part of the 40th Kadayawan Festival celebration.
