Gilas Pilipinas snapped its losing skid with a 66-57 victory over Iraq in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup on Saturday afternoon at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia—but many fans remained unconvinced.
In comments on a Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Facebook post about the win, several netizens said they believed Gilas should have performed better against the world’s 92nd-ranked team.
“Pag ganyang klase ng laro pa rin gawin nila sa next round, malamang Iraq lang kaya nilang talunin… Sure, tatalunin sila ng Jordan or kahit Saudi pa pag ganyan laro,” wrote Mauwie Timbas Jr., who also criticized head coach Tim Cone’s rotations.
“When you’ve been losing so many times, finally winning against a 92nd-ranked team feels like being in a championship,” commented Chriz Magadia.
“Congratulations Gilas! Pero di pa ganun kasolid ‘yung play nila. Kulang pa rin confidence sila Oftana, CJ at Japeth. At di pa nakakalaro si Malonzo,” said Paul Bacaran.
Others pointed to the team’s slow pace and lack of consistent shooters. “Mabagal ang larong Gilas, wala sa international standard… Kakalungkot, next round sure na sure, talo at uuwi na,” said Ernie Aquino.
Some expressed concern about the knockout stages, where Gilas will face Saudi Arabia in the qualification round and possibly world No. 5 Australia in the quarterfinals.
With the win, Gilas wrapped up the group stage at 1-2, keeping their Asia Cup campaign alive.
