The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has assured its full support to the Quezon City government in its bid to establish itself as the country’s sports capital.
PSC Chairman Patrick “Pató” Gregorio gave the commitment after the PSC Board met with Mayor Joy Belmonte, Vice Mayor Gian Sotto, and other city officials to discuss the city’s sports development initiatives.
“We were happily surprised at the depth and range of sports development in Quezon City. Mayor Joy and Vice Mayor Gian have a deep understanding of how sports can drive both social and economic development,” said Gregorio.
“The PSC is fully committed to helping QC with all their sports initiatives as they pursue their vision of becoming the Sports Capital of the Philippines.”
Quezon City has rolled out multiple projects to strengthen its sports programs, including upgrades at the Quezon City Memorial Circle, Amoranto Sports Complex, and Teresa Heights in Novaliches. Last August, the city opened an Olympic-sized swimming pool in Amoranto, while on Sept. 28, it will host the 2025 National Aquathlon Championships.
The city has also introduced “Car Free and Carefree Sundays” along Tomas Morato Avenue to promote healthier lifestyles and expanded grassroots programs such as free martial arts training in wushu, arnis, muay thai, and wrestling.
To ensure sustainability, the local government established the Sports Development Office to oversee its programs.
Gregorio said Quezon City, with PSC’s support and backing from national leadership, is well on its way to fulfilling its ambition.
“It is building facilities that inspire, programs that empower, and communities that grow stronger through sports. The city is truly living up to its ambition to be the nation’s Sports Capital,” he added.
