A satirical Facebook page has gone viral for comparing the post-career paths of PBA players who became politicians with NBA players who found success as coaches and sports analysts.
The post of Box Score PH highlighted how many NBA veterans remain active in basketball. Jason Kidd is now head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, JJ Redick was recently named head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, Charles Barkley is a longtime analyst on Inside the NBA, while Jeff Teague has made waves with his own basketball podcast.
In contrast, several PBA veterans have turned to politics after their playing days.
James Yap and Paul Artadi are both serving as councilors in San Juan City, Gary David is a councilor in Bataan, and Dondon Hontiveros once held the post of vice mayor in Cebu City.
The comparison struck a chord online, underscoring the very different paths athletes take depending on their environment, coaching and media for many NBA stars, while politics has become the post-basketball calling for several PBA icons.
“PH politics has become a retirement hub,” said Dante Cervantes.
“Kala mo talaga may mga alam sa politika hahahha,” according to Jim Louie Velasquez.
“Paldo padin outside the court,” joked Brix Paz.
“Only in the Philippines,” said Chim Sechem Piong.
